Stress

Stress is a normal part of life. Almost everyone will go through a stressful time at some point. Stress isn’t always an external problem. We can stress ourselves out by worrying about things that may not turn out to be that bad. We all have different stress triggers but it is about learning to cope with them when they arise.

7 Tips for Managing Stress

We have listed our top tips for managing and preventing stress to help guide you through stressful periods.

1. Exercise

It is no secret that exercising is good for your body and your mind. Also, it can improve your mood. Obviously, there are long-term benefits to having a regular exercise routine. But even a 20-minute run, walk or swim during a stressful time can have an immediate effect on how you feel.

2. Slow Down

Life nowadays can be so busy. Sometimes, we just need to check in with ourselves and slow down. Try to find small intervals in your day, where you can take a step back from the chaos of everyday life and just breath. Once a week, you should plan on having some real downtime to give your mind time off from stress. Things that you can do include meditation, yoga, journal writing, a hot bath or even just listening to some of your favourite music.

3. Talk About Your Problems

If you are feeling under pressure or if there are things bothering you, talking about them can help lower your stress. You can talk to people you trust such as family members, friends, co-workers, your doctor, or a therapist. It is important to be aware of what is bothering you and to not keep it to yourself. Even if you are not looking for advice for your stress, it always feels good just to get your feelings out in the open. A problem shared is a problem halved!

4. Eat Well

Eating a well-balanced diet will help you feel better overall. It has also been widely reported that it may also help control your moods. Try to make sure your meals are full of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and lean protein for energy. And don’t skip breakfast!

5. Sleep

It is vital to get enough rest and sleep. Don’t forget that stress can also be physical. Your body needs time to recover from stressful events. Tiredness will not help with stress, so make sure that you are getting the recommended 8 hours a night. If you are having trouble sleeping try sleep podcasts, sleep meditation or reading a book before bed. It’s also good to try and sleep without your phone in the room. This can be seen as one of the main causes that distract you from sleeping.

6. Learn to Accept

Accept that there are things beyond your control. Some circumstances are just beyond our control. We have to learn to accept and cope with them. Thankfully, we do have control over how we react during stressful times. Trying to stay calm is very important, and seeking emotional support from others can help in managing stress.

7. Hobbies

Make time for hobbies. Taking time for yourself as often as you can is important for both preventing and managing stress. You need to set aside time in your life for things you enjoy. Aim to do something every day that makes you feel good. It should help relieve stress. Relaxing hobbies include things like knitting, reading, meditation, art, golf, journaling and watching movies.
